How to Configure SMTP in Sitefinity to Send Emails

To make emails work in Sitefinity CMS, you must configure the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) settings required for every time the system sends emails.

For example, to send an email for a password recovery link you, would need to configure the SMTP settings in Sitefinity.

Follow the steps below for configuration:


Configure Notification Profiles

  1. In the main menu, click Administration » Settings » Advanced.

  2. Click Notifications » Profiles » Default Profile.

  3. Configure the following properties:

Below is an example for Gmail settings:

  • defaultSenderEmailAddress: myEmail
  • host: smtp.gmail.com
  • port: 587
  • useAuthentication - not checked
  • username: username/email from gmail account
  • password: mypassword
  • useSSL - checked
  • profileName: Default
  • senderType: Telerik.Sitefinity.Services.Notifications.Smtp.SmtpSender
  • profileType: smtp

Configure SMTP Settings

  1. In the main menu, click Administration » Settings » Click Advanced link.

  2. The Settings page appears. Click System » SMTP (Email Settings).

  3. Configure the following properties:

Below is an example for Gmail SMTP settings:

  • host: smtp.gmail.com
  • port: 587
  • username: username/email from gmail account
  • password: mypassword
  • domain: smtp.gmail.com
  • deliveryMethod: Network
  • enableSSL: checked
  • defaultSenderEmailAddress: myEmail

Configure Membership Provider Settings:

  1. In the main menu, click Administration » Settings » Click Advanced link.

  2. The Settings page appears. Click Security » Membership Provider > Parameters.

  3. Configure the following Parameters:
  • enablePasswordRetrieval – true
  • enablePasswordReset – false
  • requiresQuestionAndAnswer – false (as per your requirement)
  • recoveryMailAddress - my mail

Once all the above settings are configured, you might need to restart the application in order for the changes to take effect.

Now you should be successfully able to send emails from Sitefinity.
